Review: A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole – #swordbae is life

Cover of A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole - a man and woman embrace, about to kiss

Forging metal into weapons and armor is one thing, but when desire burns out of control and the media spotlight gets too hot to bear, can a commoner turned duke and his posh apprentice find lasting love?

I adored this book – sitting in the parking lot because you don’t want to go inside and therefore have to wait five minutes to finish is what true love is all about!

Portia is a truly wonderful heroine, whose efforts to manage her mental health are as realistic as they are relatable. And Tav is my favorite kind of hero – hot, funny, and willing to own up when he fucked up.Alyssa Cole’s ability to thread the needle of escapist fantasies of royalty and riches while balancing real-world politics and morality is nearly as impressive as the visuals of Tav’s power grinder action.

Also, I haven’t read A Princess in Theory (yet – it’s downloading as I type this), and I had absolutely no trouble whatsoever reading this one, so if you weren’t sure but wanted to jump in here, go for it!
